Top 10 Dog Training Tips for Raising a Happy, Confident Dog
At Playful Paws, we believe that training should be fun, rewarding, and part of everyday life. Whether you’ve welcomed a brand-new puppy or are working with an older dog, building good habits and clear communication will help create a dog that can go more places, more often.
Here are our top 10 training tips to help set you and your dog up for success!
1. Create Clear House Rules
Dogs thrive when they understand what is expected of them. Decide as a family what your rules are and be consistent with them. Reward the behaviours you like, such as calmly staying out of the kitchen, and gently redirect behaviours you don’t want.
Consistency creates clarity, and clarity helps dogs succeed.
2. Set Specific Goals
Think about what you would like your dog to do rather than what you don’t want them to do.
For example:
- Sit calmly when visitors arrive.
- Walk nicely on a loose lead.
- Relax quietly while you’re having dinner.
Being specific gives both you and your dog a clear direction and makes training much easier.
3. Consistency is Key
Dogs learn best when everyone is working towards the same goal. Make sure all family members are using the same cues and rewarding the same behaviours.
Writing your goals down can help keep everyone on the same page.
4. Stay Cool, Calm and Confident
Dogs are experts at reading body language. They often pay more attention to how we move and behave than the words we say.
Approach training with confidence and patience. Your dog will feel more secure and relaxed when you are calm and clear.
5. Reward the Behaviours You Want
Just like people, dogs need encouragement when they are doing the right thing.
Whether it’s treats, toys, praise, or play, reinforcing desirable behaviours makes them much more likely to happen again. Remember, what gets rewarded gets repeated!
6. Set Your Dog Up for Success
Have realistic expectations based on your dog’s age, breed, personality, and experience.
A 12-week-old puppy isn’t expected to behave like an 8-year-old dog. Every dog learns at their own pace, and it’s important to celebrate the small wins along the way.
7. Explore the World Together
Walks are about much more than exercise.
Taking your dog out to experience different sights, sounds, smells, people, and environments helps build confidence and resilience. We love a good “sniffari”- allowing your dog to investigate and engage with the world around them.
New experiences create well-rounded dogs!
8. Training Happens Every Day
Every interaction with your dog is a learning opportunity.
Set aside two short training sessions each day, around 5–10 minutes each, but remember that training doesn’t stop there. Everyday moments like feeding, greeting visitors, and going for walks all contribute to your dog’s learning.
These small moments add up to big results.
9. Be Patient
Learning takes time.
It’s completely normal to take a step backwards before moving forwards again. Dogs are not robots, and no dog is perfect.
Enjoy the process, celebrate progress, and remember that building a strong relationship with your dog is just as important as teaching skills.
10. Have Fun!
This is our favourite tip!
Training should be enjoyable for both you and your dog. When learning is fun, dogs become more engaged, more confident, and more eager to work with us.
Most importantly, training strengthens the bond between you and your dog and helps create a happy companion who can join you on life’s adventures.
