The Five C’s of Dog Training: Building Better Communication With Your Dog
At Playful Paws, we believe that great dog training starts with great communication.
Dogs don’t communicate with words the way we do. In fact, much of what they learn comes from reading our body language, our tone of voice, and the consistency of the messages we send.
If we want to strengthen our relationship with our dogs and help them become happy, confident companions, there are five key principles we focus on – the Five C’s of Dog Training.
1. Calm
Our dogs are incredibly perceptive and often notice changes in our emotions before we do.
If we’ve had a stressful day, are feeling frustrated, or are rushing around, our dogs can pick up on those emotions and may become unsettled themselves.
Before interacting with your dog, take a moment to reset. Go for a relaxed sniffari, practice some fun tricks, or simply spend some quiet time together.
A calm handler helps create a calm dog.
2. Clear
Dogs thrive when they understand what is expected of them.
Setting clear expectations and boundaries helps prevent confusion and allows your dog to make good choices. Mixed messages can make learning difficult, especially in households with multiple family members.
For example, if your dog is allowed to jump up on one person but not another, they may struggle to understand the rules.
Creating a list of household expectations and ensuring everyone follows them can make a huge difference.
3. Consistent
Consistency is one of the most important ingredients for successful training.
Once you’ve established your rules, stick with them. Dogs learn through repetition and predictability, and changing the rules from day to day can create confusion.
For example, if your dog is allowed on the couch one day but not the next, they may start making their own decisions about when couch privileges apply.
Consistency creates confidence and helps your dog understand exactly what earns reinforcement.
4. Confident
Dogs often mirror our emotions and body language.
When we feel anxious or worried, our posture changes. We may tense up, hold our breath, or tighten the lead without even realising it. Our dogs notice these subtle changes and can become concerned because they sense that we are.
Approaching situations with confidence helps your dog feel safe and secure.
Remember, your dog is looking to you for guidance.
5. Connection
At the heart of all training is the relationship you share with your dog.
Training isn’t just about teaching behaviours, it’s about building trust, understanding, and teamwork. By spending quality time together, rewarding good choices, and making learning enjoyable, you strengthen the bond that makes training successful.
A strong connection creates a dog that wants to work with you, not just for you.
